Why davmo?

You may ask yourself why the "davmo" name? Why use such a name and where did it come from? When I first started painting in 1994 I used to sign each and every one of my paintings with my "real" name. Locally people knew my art and identified my art with my name. However in late 1997 I really felt a name change was needed. This was the time after I had been been stalked by a real life "fatal attraction" and I was afraid that this crazed bitch that I am speaking of would go into any of the local galleries where my art was being displayed and she might decide to have a field day with a knife and slice my paintings to shreds or she would deface or destroy them in some other clever sadistic way.

This was also the same year that my father died and after he died I wasn't too happy with him. For years he was a major block that kept me from pursuing anything creative or artistic so basically I felt I wanted to be removed as far away from his legacy that I could. I actually was thinking about legally changing my name.

After looking into a legal name change I discovered that was really not going to be an option. A friend Arthur Perkins who I worked with and also surfed with at some of the local breaks had already given me a nickname and he and others called me this name all the time. It was a word that was a creation of bashing together my first and last name.

When Arthur learned about my need for a change he said why don't I just use "davmo". He said "You are davmo anyways!" So that is the way the name davmo was created and bestowed upon me. It wasn't my idea. I am sure if I really tried I could have come up with an name that was much cooler if I would have tried. But maybe Arthur was right.
